ENGINEERING VISION TO REALITY Hyundai shifts gears in pursuit of environmental leadership

The word paradigm was first coined in 1962 by an American physicist named Thomas Samuel Kuhn, who discovered that generations are often governed by worldviews. In his socio-philosophical book entitled The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, he stated that paradigms shape how people think and live, as if containing them in a conceptual box of finite knowledge.  But there are times when a few people discover anomalies in the existing conventions.  Unlike the rest who follow the mainstream, these individuals become visionaries who see new possibilities outside the box.  Their knowledge gives birth to new perspectives, new visions for the future that create a transition from old values to fresh and novel beginnings in a revolutionary changeover called paradigm shift.

History has witnessed how great visionaries had shaped the paradigms of the planet. There was Galileo Galilei, the father of modern observational astronomy and modern physics, who championed the Copernican geocentric (Earth as the center of the universe) theory with his own Sun-centered heliocentric theorem.  Another great mind who has led the world to another revolutionary science was English naturalist Charles Darwin, author of the 1859 book On the Origin of Species, who proposed that all species of life undergo a series of life-changing evolutionary process called natural selection.

Galileo, Darwin, and many other great minds had helped shape our world to what it is today.  Although their novel ideas were challenged by large communities of skeptics, their visions of the future eventually paved new roads for modern advancements.

In the automotive world, Hyundai, a visionary automaker and a serious game-changer in the world of automotives, takes a bold stance to create cars that not only meet the world’s demand for transportation, but ultimately, to introduce a paradigm shift in mobility, with saving the environment at the forefront of its mission.

From being a humble automaker to one of the most enterprising corporations in the world, Hyundai sets its pace to starting a new paradigm shift – that is, taking the present generation motoring community to a greener future where cars, people, and the planet coexist together in one thriving and sustainable ecosystem.  This eco-environmental effort is driven by the synergistic efforts of different people from different walks of life, yet share the same principle and vision in changing the face of the planet.  Indeed, this will never be an individual battle, but a collective endeavor from all of Hyundai’s dedicated research teams, scientists, marketers, dealers, developers, and of course, the motoring public.

From vision to victory

Even before the beginning of the 21st century, Hyundai has already laden its blueprints to implementing its green campaigns around the world – from constructing eco-friendly facilities to developing resource-friendly drives.

One of the most successful creations Hyundai has undertaken is its Hyundai Steel headquarters, a network of eco-friendly closed-type steelmaking facilities that serve as the company’s primary source of high-quality steel products in the production of automobiles.  The difference of the Hyundai Steel to other plants is its high regard for the environment.  Being an enclosed resource-generating facility, its purpose is to contain all sorts of metal by-products in an isolated space, far from natural habitats and reserves.

Toxic wastes are all the more diminished as all Hyundai manufacturing plants around the globe comply with standard eco-friendly manufacturing at all stages.  These series of sophisticated processes include a zero wastewater discharge system that guarantees pollution-free production, and an automobile resource regeneration center for recycling, a clever way of reusing parts and transforming them into in-house transportation units.

Hyundai’s research and development (R&D) centers and eco-technology research institutes also play an important role in investing on future cars designed with better fuel efficiency and hybridized technologies.  At the company’s research labs in Namyang, South Korea, thousands of engineers are devoted to building innovative automobile powerhouses and its signature Blue-drives.  Through its Blue Drive initiatives, Hyundai envisions the realization of sustainable mobility with zero emissions vehicles which will be powered by renewable energy.  These are coupled with Hyundai’s clean manufacturing and efforts to minimize waste and CO2 emissions at the factory level.

Equally important, at the other end of the cycle, Hyundai is extending recycling technology for end-of-life vehicles by which Hyundai demonstrates its increasing responsibility for maximizing the recyclable content of its vehicles.

Championing its pursuit of environmental leadership by harnessing technologies that are energy-efficient, sustainable, and positively impact the environment, Hyundai pushes new frontiers to revolutionize mobility, and more significantly, our way of life.

The ix-Metro: Another promising vision in the future of mobility

Perhaps one of the most promising concept cars ever designed by the geniuses behind Hyundai’s Global Design Team is the ix-Metro Hybrid Electric Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), also codenamed HND-5 for being the fifth prototype design for the Hyundai Namyang Design (HND) series.

Sci-fi and space-inspired, the ix-Metro is a stunning resemblance of an extraterrestrial life form protected by a compact, robotic shell-armor and technology-infused survival instincts.

Glancing at its exterior profile alone, one could easily distinguish the triangular motif applied to its lighting elements, such as the ice-blue LED headlights and fang-shaped foglamps that interplay with gold outlines on the front grille and optic clusters at the rear profile.

Another radical element in this highly-evolved HND-5 car is the B-Pillarless door frame at the laterals, allowing easier ingress and egress, especially into the backseat.  The front doors open naturally sideways with the hinge at the side nearest the bumper, while the rear doors slide to the back, allowing for convenient loading and unloading of hefty baggage as well.

Inside its Monocoque 5-door body is a centralized cockpit that merges the center console, door panel, dashboard, and front seats in one indivisible structure, thereby reducing unnecessary compartments that could just take up space and reduce convenience.

Luxury-class leadership inspires as well the ix-Metro’s cabin with its immaculate dashboard coated in non-toxic, translucent, silicon-texture material to cover the organic electro luminescence (OEL) central display that provides active-time navigation and intelligent control options while driving.

As for the navigation, the central gauge cluster also provides precise and comprehensible raw performance facts of the ix-Metro with its 3D digital display board. Enhancing its futuristic image on top are the ultra-thin digital side-view cameras, the foldable rear seats and cargo area, and the ice-blue interior lighting.

More than its sci-fi and extraterrestrial appeal, this HND-5 hides within its shell an eco-friendly, hybridized, electric powerhouse.  Its performance benefits with a maximum 92kW of power @ 6000rpm and a peak torque of 16.0kg-m between 1750-4500rpm. Its 1-liter, Dual CVVT enhanced with turbocharging and direct-injection capacities, is designed for fuel flexibility and efficient boost of power.  While the ix-Metro’s dual-clutch gearbox commands over acceleration through 6-forward, automatic gear modes, the en suite ultracapacitor (Electric Double Layer) and 12V battery help supply power to the starter motor-alternator that delivers up to 5kW of torque assistance to secure driving precision.  This concept car strives for the lowest CO2 emissions possible, at just 80g/km; and as for fuel consumption, its efficiency is rated at 3.3-liter/100km.

The Wonderful World of Hyundai

In the Philippines, Hyundai Asia Resources, Incorporated or HARI, the exclusive distributor of Hyundai automobiles in the country, and its authorized dealerships nationwide are working together to translate Hyundai’s eco-drive to the Filipino motoring community.  Earlier this year, HARI had started its “Next Generation” campaign, a series of exciting activities and promotional tours that encouraged Hyundai customers to take part in Hyundai’s green efforts.  This campaign comes full circle at The Wonderful World of Hyundai.  Here, HARI will proudly display its lineup of forward-looking and nature-friendly technologies such as the fluidic Sonata sedan and Tucson SUV, the Grand Starex Limousine passenger van, the fiery Genesis Coupe muscle car, and the life-changing Santa Fe Crossover SUV.  These green emissaries will also add the ix-Metro to the roster of next generation drives at the 3rd Philippine International Motor Show at the World Trade Center Manila from August 19-22, 2010, where The Wonderful World of Hyundai will come to life and engage the motoring community in Hyundai’s advocacy to change the future and become a Hyundai eco-ambassador.

Together, we can create a new paradigm for our world, where cars, people, and the planet are all one.
